Georgia's Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory - Shortly after World War II, the Pentagon considered a possibility of developing a nuclear powered aircraft to upgrade it’s fleet of Air Force aircraft. In 1956 Lockheed purchased 11,000 acres just outside of Dawsonville, Georgia that became known as Georgia Nuclear Aircraft Laboratory. While today there is little is left of the facilities, this project did leave behind some of the radioactive wastes in the form of radiation from tests actually performed in laboratories. Currently the property is used for horseback ridding and hiking trails. Check out this interesting story here. |

Hoschton Georgia is a growing city located in Jackson County. It was once owned by the Hosch brouthers who donated the property in 1881 to build a town and train depot in anticipation of the railroad tracks being extended from Gainesville Georgia to Jefferson Georgia. Discover the 2013 Moonshine Festival in Dawsonville Georgia - This festival was fun and exciting! The crowd was large and everyone was having a great time. It was spread throughout historic Dawsonville streets. It started with a fabulous car show at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame. Visit Sawnee Mountain Preserve - The 5,600-square-foot visitors center features interactive exhibits and a reading and relaxing area. The 720-acre park has hiking trails and areas for rock climbing and rappelling, which require a permit from the available at the visitors center. Visit Fort Mountain State Park. Fort Mountain (elevation 2840') is part of the Cohutta Mountain Range. 'Cohutta' is an English translation of a Cherokee word. It means 'a shad roof supported on poles,' and describes how the mountain seem to support the sky from a distance. It has directions to start each trail from the downtown Dahlonega-Lumpkin Visitors Center. The user-friendly Guide key includes each trail’s name, the trail’s length, whether it is a loop or one-way, and the managing agency of the trail as well as a fun note that “descriptions shown are for the more common hiking direction used, but there is no reason not to hike in the opposite direction”.
