Birdsong Nature Center was formerly a working plantation, then an experimental farm. Birdsong’s 565 acres are now managed as a nature preserve that supports a diversity ofobservable wildlife in woodland, wetland, and old-field habitats, easily accessible on 12 miles of nature trails. The co-founder, the late Betty Komarek, designed the original Bird Window and gardens, which have been attracting birds and other wildlife since 1938. Birdsong hosts many guided walks and nature events throughout the year including the Annual Butterfly Festival in July and the Fall Festival in October. | Chatham County Garden Center and Botanical Gardens are on land once used as a prison farm. A historic 1840s wooden farmhouse about to be demolished was transported to these premises to serve as the garden center headquarters. This 10-acre site serves to educate the public in conservation, horticulture, landscape design, even garden therapy. Courses and lectures are routinely given in botany and related fields, tours of these and other botanical gardens are conducted, and the already fine collection of native trees (some quite mature), shrubs, and flowers is being enlarged. | Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm - developed around a historic early 20th-century USDA plant introduction station (now closed) – is a 51-acre site ten miles southwest of downtown Savannah. Numerous bamboo clumps, some species the first of their kind planted in the United States, grow here still, as do magnificent specimens of Japanese evergreen oak, Chinese pistachio, Oliver maple, China fir and lord’s holly. You-pick berry fields, freshwater lakes and specialty gardens are also found. CGBG is known for its noteworthy collections of cold-hardy palms, aquatic ornamentals and species camellias. | Favorite Things Daylily Garden - This AHS approved Display Garden holds approximately 1000 varieties from Lily's from the older hard to find varieties to the very newest, approximately 500 are in display beds. Peak bloom is usually around the 12th - 20th June, depending on the weather. | Fulwood Garden Center - Mr. and Mrs P. D. Fulwood built their stately home for their family in 1914. The beautiful gardens made this one of South Georgia's most beautiful sights.Mr. Fulwood was a pioneer in vegetable plant production in the early 1900's. | Gardens of H. M. Patterson & Sons - Conceived in the late 1920s by architect Philip Shutze to complement his elegant design for the house, the gardens at Spring Hill are divided into two sections, one formal, the other less so. On the north end of the building is the intimate, partially enclosed formal area, with symmetrical rows of boxwoods, geometric flower beds, and grassy cutouts. A graceful female statue and a small fountain with a basin of aquatic plants add classical touches. The south garden features a gently sloping hillside of colorful flowers and shrubs amid rocks and stone pathways. Awalk in a garden surrounding a funeral home might not strike most people as an especially inviting proposition, but a visit to either of these two similar sites might revise this view. Marietta Educational Garden Center is supported by the 24 Garden Clubs of Marietta, GA. The Center is frequented by these groups for meetings, social gatherings and public events.
