Semiquincentenary Fountain in Lafayette Square
LaFayette Square in Savannah GeorgiaThe 1799 LaFayette Square 1799 celebrates the freedom and independence gained through the Revolution and to honor 'Sons of Liberty' who had fought for independence.

In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the colony of Georgia, in the center of Lafayette Square in 1982-83, a fountain was placed by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.

The Semiquencentenary fountain is a 3-tiered, verde antique, cast iron with naturalistic, picturesque details. See the leaves which compose the 3 basins, the long-necked water fowl around the pedestal between the bottom and middle basins, and 4 frogs poised to leap off 4 equidistant points around the round base at the fountain pedestal is mounted.

The pedestal, which has four scrolled supports, stands in the center of a round brick pool, topped with a stone coping.

This is one of two lost squares. It is located on Montgomery Street in front of the present County Courthouse.

It was laid out in 1799 and named to celebrate the freedom and independence gained through the Revolution and to honor the "Sons of Liberty" who had fought for independence.

The "Flame of Freedom" is now on this site.
