Richard B. Russell Dam and Lake - The lake covers over 26,000 surface acres with 540 miles of shoreline and has a depth of 155 feet at full pool. The lake is operated and managed by the Corps. of Engineers subsequently there are no houses cabins or other dwellings lining the lake's shore. This was in an effort to preserve the environment and its wildlife. The lake is fed by the Savannah River and Rocky River as well as Beaverdam, Coldwater, and Van Creeks.

Lake Richard B. Russell is the newest of GA's reservoirs, it was formed when the dam located on Trotter Shoals closed in 1984. The lake and dam were named after the Governor of Georgia during the Depression. The lake was originally made for the production of electricity but has never been run to capacity and has since been converted to a pump back facility. This was due to wide-spread controversy of the number of fish being killed in the turbines of the plant.
